WKU Students Honored in Hearst Multimedia Competition

wku logoBOWLING GREEN, KY (2/17/12) – Western Kentucky University senior Zach Conkle of Louisville has qualified for the National Multimedia Championship in the 52nd annual Hearst Journalism Awards Program.

Conkle finished second in the multimedia category of The Human Condition and received a $2,000 scholarship for his multimedia piece titled “The Only Sure Thing” from the WKU Photojournalism website. Since the contest’s first-place finisher has graduated and isn’t eligible for the national finals, Conkle advanced to the Hearst national championships that will be held in June in San Francisco.

Ryan Stone, a May graduate from Roanoke, Va., placed third in the multimedia competition and received a $1,500 award. WKU’s School of Journalism & Broadcasting will receive matching awards.

Often called the “Pulitzers of College Journalism,” the Hearst program holds yearlong competitions in writing, photojournalism, broadcast news and multimedia offering more than $550,000 in scholarships, matching grants and stipends. Points from each competition are calculated to determine the Overall Intercollegiate winners.

WKU is in second place after two of four multimedia competitions behind University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The rest of the top 10 is: University of Missouri; Arizona State University; Syracuse University; Pennsylvania State University; University of Montana; University of Oregon; University of Nebraska; and University of Florida.

WKU’s School of Journalism & Broadcasting placed third overall in the 2010-11 Hearst program and has ranked among the top eight nationally for 18 consecutive years. WKU has won the Intercollegiate Photojournalism Competition for three consecutive years and 19 out of the past 22 years. This year’s final Inter-collegiate winners will be announced in April.
