Public Health Physician Participates in National Tuberculosis Training

barren river HD 300BOWLING GREEN, KY (1/19/12) - The Barren River District Health Department is the primary resource for health care providers in our area when it comes to TB control. As the TB control officer for the health department, Douglas Thomson M.D., M.P.H. recently represented our community by attending a comprehensive Tuberculosis course sponsored by the Southeastern National Tuberculosis Center in Lantana, Florida.

The BRDHD provides valuable resources for identifying those at risk of contracting TB. The health department also provides preventive treatment and coordinates treatment for active TB cases. In addition to treating TB cases himself, Dr. Thomson assists local Physicians by serving as a resource and as a liaison to State and National TB services.

Worldwide, tuberculosis remains a serious problem. Fortunately, case rates in the United States and our region are comparatively low.
