mustang footbl 2015GREENVILLE, Ky. (8/1/17) — After making an appearance in the Class 6A State Playoffs, Muhlenberg County faces the task of filling several voids left on the gridiron.

Graduation hurt the Muhlenberg County gridiron program.

Now, will the Mustangs reload or rebuild?

Muhlenberg County lost several talented players to graduation including experienced quarterback Hunter Combs. One of the state's most underrated high school quarterbacks, Combs completed 69-of-141 passes for 1,354 yards and 15 touchdowns during his senior season.

Senior wide receiver/defensive back Karsen Steele is back for the Mustangs. Steele hauled in 12 catches for 392 yards and five touchdown receptions during the 2016 season, leading Muhlenberg County in receiving.

The Mustangs opened the 2016 season 5-0 and remained a district title contender during a portion of the second half of the regular-season.

After carrying a 7-3 record out of the 2016 regular-season, Muhlenberg County lost to St. Xavier in the first round of the Class 6A State Playoffs.

The Mustangs, under the guidance of head coach Hays Browning, managed to outscore opponents 378-366 last season.

Muhlenberg County competes with McCracken County, Henderson County, Daviess County and Ohio County in Class 6A, District 1. McCracken County is set to enter the 2017 season as the Class 6A, District 1 favorite.

Muhlenberg County's 2017 schedule is made up of games versus Apollo, Logan County, Hopkins County Central, McLean County, Butler County, Henderson County, Daviess County, Ohio County, McCracken County and Grayson County.

The Mustangs are slated to visit Apollo for a season-opener at 7 p.m. on Aug. 18.
