MCHS Bass Fishing Team to Host Fundraising Swap Meet

muh fishing team 300GREENVILLE, Ky. (1/10/14) — The Muhlenberg County High School Bass Fishing Team's 2nd Annual Swap Meet is just weeks away.

Cody Napier, coach of the team, told SurfKY News the event will be held Saturday, Jan. 25, 7:30 a.m. - 2 p.m.at the Muhlenberg West Campus.

The swap meet is open to the public. Admission is $5 for adults, and free for those 12 years of age and under.

Napier said the meet is a good opportunity for fishermen to stock up on bait and tackle for the upcoming season.

"We all know how expensive new tackle, bait, and fishing supplies are and this is the perfect chance to find great buys on top quality fishing gear," Napier said.

Napier noted that 100 tables are available for vendors.

"The price is $15 per table, and $10 for each additional table,” Napier said. “Vendors need to arrive around 6 a.m. in order to be set up when the doors open."

The MCHS fishing team sent other teams reeling with a phenomenal first season. The Mustangs ranked among the top teams in the state.

This year, Napier hopes the team will do even better. But he emphasized to SurfKY News that much of the team's success depends on the financial support of the community.

"We don't receive a great deal of funds from the school system so we depend largely on fund raisers,” he said. “To win, our team has to have the best quality equipment they can possibly get."

Napier said that during its inaugural year, the team concentrated on technique and just getting the team going. But, he admits, they did ignore the area of quality equipment.

"Last year, rods and reels were not at the top of the list, but this year they are,” he said. “We want our team to be able to compete and not have to worry about their rods and reels tearing up."

Napier said many people do not realize that most of the funds used for the team for training, equipment and gas to get to events are the team's responsibility, not the school's.

"Things you might not think about like gas for the vehicles and boats are also a necessity, along with tackle and other necessities,” Napier said. “These fundraisers make all the difference between winning and losing in a large part."

Napier said the team had an amazing year last year, and they have everyone back except two players.

"We had a great performance at the regional tournament,” Napier said. “We had four of five boats make it to the state tournament, which was the most who made it to the state tournament. Also, at the state championship we had the biggest fish overall, caught by Hunter Hampton."

This season's Mustang Bass Fishing Team includes Chase Geary, Camerson Brooks, Jacob Bowles, Brandon Payne, Hunter Hampton, Billy Hardison, Cole Noffsinger, Peyton Lipe, Nathan Flener, Lucas Adams, Drew Mendoza and Taylor Harris.
