honor cableOWENSBORO, Ky. (4/3/2013) – On Thursday, Owensboro will once again honor a fallen soldier. Sergeant Michael Cable, a Philpot native, was playing with a group of Afghan children when an approximately 16-year-old Afghan teenager stabbed Sgt. Cable in the neck. The youth then escaped pursuit by fleeing over the Afghan border into Pakistan. It isn't known if this was an isolated event, or was intended to be a part of a larger, Taliban-structured attack on American troops.

Sgt. Cable was assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarter Company, 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, in Fort Campbell.

Cable’s plane is expected to land at the Owensboro Regional Airport at 8:35 a.m Thursday morning. A Facebook page has been created by Cable’s family to honor his memory. Most recently, a post from them requests everyone to wear green Thursday, and if possible, to post a picture on his wall.

After landing, a procession route will start at the Owensboro/Daviess County Regional Airport. It will proceed down Tamarack Road to Frederica Street, then down Frederica to 7th Street, and from 7th to Locust Street before arriving at Haley-McGinnis Funeral Home. Visitation will be on Friday from 2-8, and Saturday from 11-1. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Owensboro is no stranger to the loss of its native sons to war. On September 11, 2011, on the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Owensboro welcomed home PFC. Brandon Mullins, who was killed in the line of duty in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan.
