flag soldier 300FRANKFORT, Ky. (5/18/13) – On the third Saturday in May, many Americans celebrate Armed Forces Day to pay tribute to the women and men who served in the United States armed forces.
 
Many events take place across the United States that include; multi-service military displays in areas open for public, various educational activities for children to learn about armed forces, “Support the Troops” themed motorcycle rides, parades and any other celebrations local communities offer.
 
Back in August of 1949, Louis Johnson, who was the United States Secretary of Defense, announced the creation of an armed forces day to replace separate Navy, Army, Air Force and Marines days. However, the Marine Corps League declined to drop Marine Corps Day but does support Armed Forces Day too.

The very first Armed Forces Day was celebrated in 1950. According to the United States Department of Defense, this day was designed to expand the public’s knowledge of what type of job was performed and the role the military was in civilian life. This day is also celebrated by the military showing “state-of-the-art” equipment to Americans.
 
President Dwight D. Eisenhower once stated, “Today let us, as Americans, honor the American fighting man. For it is he--the soldier, the sailor, the Airman, the Marine-- who has fought to preserve freedom. It is his valor that has given renewed hope to the free world that by working together in discipline and faith our ideals of freedom will always prevail."
