beshear b 300FRANKFORT, Ky. (9/14/13) – Governor Steve Beshear announced today that Kentucky has received $6.125 million in federal grants for local drug prevention programs, ranking the Commonwealth among the top eight states receiving grants to prevent youth substance abuse under the Drug-Free Communities (DFC) program.

“We are not powerless against the challenge of drug use among young people here in Kentucky,” Gov. Beshear said. “Research shows that prevention is the most effective tool we have to reduce the terrible consequences associated with drug use among young people. This new funding will help local organizations place more young people on the path toward success and enable them to live healthier and safer lives.”

The funds, received through the Office of National Drug Control Policy, were awarded to Local Kentucky Agency for Substance Abuse Policy Boards (KY-ASAP) and Kentucky community coalitions.

The program provides new grants of up to $625,000 over five years, and up to $125,000 for continuation grantees, to community coalitions that facilitate citizen participation in local drug prevention efforts. Coalitions are composed of community leaders, parents, youth, teachers, religious and fraternal organizations, healthcare and business professionals, law enforcement, the media, and others working together at the local level.

The philosophy behind the DFC program is that local drug problems require local solutions, according to Van Ingram, executive director of Kentucky Office of Drug Control Policy.

“Grassroots efforts are vital to changing attitudes about drug and alcohol use, educating individuals about health risks, and effectively changing behaviors,” Ingram said. “These extraordinary partners tap into local prevention expertise to continually find new ways to enlist their communities in the ongoing effort to prevent youth substance abuse.”

Kentucky received 25 DFC grants in 2013, more DFC awards per capita than any other state.
