LEXINGTON, Ky. (11/7/13) – According to an article published by NBC News, the Food and Drug Administration announced Thursday it would require food makers to gradually phase out artificial trans fats, citing that they are a threat to people's health.
Trans fats are mostly found in crackers, cookies, pizza, and other baked goods. They increase heart disease by raising bad cholesterol levels and lowering good cholesterol levels. It's widely considered the worst type of fat for your heart. FDA commissioner Margaret Hamburg was quoted in the article as saying the change could potentially prevent 20,000 heart attacks a year and 7,000 deaths.
A timeline has not yet been set to determine how long it will take to completely do away with trans fats. The agency will collect public comments on the measure over the course of the next two months.
