Aces Pull Out Hard Win Against Panthers

OWENSBORO, Ky. (9/2/13) – Friday night the Owensboro Catholic Aces battled for a tough victory against the Daviess County Panthers. It was a difficult game for both teams. The Aces improved to 2-0 in the young 2013 season, while the Panthers fell to 0-2. The final score was 13-37 in favor of the Aces, but the game was much closer than the final score.

The Panthers played strong defense on the Aces’ first possession and forced a three and out. Daviess County took advantage of a bad snap by the Aces and got the ball on the 10 yard line. Catholic made a goal line stand and got the ball back after DC failed to score on fourth down.

Aces made another mistake a couple of plays later when #23 Holden Staples fumbled on the 24 yard line. This gave Daviess County another possession in their red zone except this time they made Catholic pay when DC’s #23 Chase Lecroy ran in for a Touchdown. The extra point got blocked, giving the Panthers a 6–0 lead.

Owensboro Catholic answered back with a long drive and Staples ran into the end zone to even the score 6–6. Catholic failed to make a two-point conversion toward the end of the first quarter.

Catholic again scored when #12 Houston Hartz connected with #18 Jason Toth for a 32-yard touchdown. #33 Andrew McIntosh missed the extra point, and Owensboro Catholic turned the tables on the Panthers with a score of 12-6.

The Aces defense was solid in the first half as they took advantage of mistakes by Daviess County. With 7:29 left to play in the half, the Panthers snapped the ball over their quarterback Luke Bailey’s head but #59 Bailey Maloney for Catholic picked up the ball and returned it for a touchdown for the Aces. Again the extra point was no good and Catholic upped their lead another seven points. 6 – 19.

Daviess County put the pieces together late in the first half whenever #7 Luke Bailey ran a quarterback sneak into the end zone with 38 seconds left to play. They failed on their two-point conversion and went to half time with the score 13 – 19 in favor of the Aces.

Catholic would come out in the second half and pull away with two touchdowns in the third quarter. The first would be a five-yard touchdown pass from Houston Hartz to #11 Joseph Mills, followed by a five yard run by #25 Jonathan Garner for the Aces making the score 13 – 31.

Daviess County threw three interceptions on their next three possessions. The last interception was returned for a touchdown by #18 Jason Toth for the Aces.

Toth’s touchdown marked the last of the game, with the final score 37–13.

The stories for both teams were turnovers and dropped balls. Owensboro Catholic hurt them in the beginning with a bad snap and with the fumble that led to the Panthers’ first touchdown.

Daviess County couldn’t make the comeback, and after throwing some interceptions Catholic was able to pull away.

After the game, Aces’ Coach John Edge talked about how his team needs to improve. He said his players shouldn’t be happy with that win. The Aces had around 22 dropped balls in the game and two of those were in the end zone.

“Defense played good and with Daviess County’s great athletes, defense had to show up and play. The offense needs work in order to be ready for Owensboro,” Edge said.

With Catholic winning this game they are poised to face the Owensboro Red Devils Friday night for the City County Championship. This game will be at OHS’ Rash Stadium at 7. p.m.
