Kentucky-Based X-Rea Productions on the Rise

cagedKENTUCKY (8/14/14) — X-Rea Productions, a video production company based mainly out of Bowling Green, Paducah and Nashville, has been making headway in short films.

Co-founded by Brad Rea and Bradley Englert in September, 2012, Rea is now the primary owner and operator for the company.

Rea graduated in May, 2014, with a degree in broadcasting and an emphasis in television and film production from Western Kentucky University.

Some of Rea’s work includes a short film called “Stitch,” which follows two men involved in a hunt for revenge in a 19th century, old, western town. One is the hunter, and the other the prey. Upon the final confrontation, the prey realizes the two share a horrifying connection.

“Stitch was shot in a place called Copper Canyon Ranch, which is in the Hopkinsville area,” said Rea. “Tim and Carole Emery (the owners) were incredibly accommodating to us and our crew and were a pleasure to work with.”

‘Stitch’ was inspired by a "House of the Rising Sun" cover song by Five Finger Death Punch.

“I was driving to Paducah for a video gig and heard it,” said Rea. “It immediately gave me the broad idea for Stitch. From there, I talked it over with my partner and scriptwriter on the project (Bradley Englert), and we hashed out the more specific plot points then.”

Rea then turned the project in for his capstone class in broadcasting. The film was also submitted to the WKU Film Festival and won Best Picture, Best Editing and Best Screenplay.

“The film has also been an official selection at the Nashville Comic and Horror Festival,” said Rea. “The film follows a man being stalked by a bounty hunter.”

Rea’s latest work, “Caged,” is a film about an MMA fighter, who has a dark and abusive father.

“The fighter reflects his glory of his past with his fighting,” said Rea. “His father is a washed up drunk.”

The film itself will be no more than 10 minutes long.

“We still have two more final shots,” said Rea. “The finale fight is the longest sequence. I was actually driving to Copper Canyon one day, when I noticed a place about four or five miles away with a lot of trash in the front of the yard and a punching bag,” said Rea. “That is what gave me the background to the story. What if the fighter grew up in these gross conditions? Grew up to be a challenger.”

Rea said the film isn’t so much about fighting but about the relationship between the characters.

“This film isn’t centered on fighting,” said Rea. “It’s not about the fighting, but about the relationship between father and son… the dynamics of the characters. That’s the big thing. This won’t be available for the public for a while,” said Rea. “We will be wrapping everything up early to middle of Oct. The last shoot will be in Sept. It will be put in different film festivals before the public will be able to view it.”

Rea said that they have tried really hard to stay local.

“We tried to film as local as we can,” said Rea. “We will have to shoot the finale in another state, we need a big venue and crowd.”

Rea said that a lot of people don’t realize how big MMA fighting has become in Kentucky and he hopes this short film will shed some light on it.
