KENTUCKY (8/16/14) First-time pumpkin grower Robert Dahlem of Jeffersonville, Ky., grabbed first prize in the fourth annual Largest Pumpkin Contest.
His pumpkin weighed 254 pounds. Dahlem was declared the winner at the 2014 Kentucky State Fair during the official weigh-in on Friday morning on the West Hall porch, hosted by former local television personality Barry Bernson.
Don Bunch of Louisville, Ky., and Larry Dailey of Palmyra, Ind. Earned second and third place.
Flaherty, Ky., grower Frank Mudd won the Largest Watermelon Contest, held in conjunction with the pumpkin contest. Mudd, a former winner of the Largest Pumpkin Contest, grabbed the $100 first prize with his 217.5 pound watermelon.
The pumpkins will be moved to the West Hall for the remainder of the Fair for viewing. The contest is the largest premium of any Kentucky State Fair entry category.
