School Board Meets At Weekly Business Luncheon

ops3 300OWENSBORO, Ky (5/14/13) – A new bowling program, consideration of implementing a new free lunch program, and the possible purchase of a new mower were three main topics of discussion during the Owensboro Board of Education's weekly school board luncheon Owensboro Middle School North today.

The first item for discussion was the implementation of a new Bowling program at Owensboro High School. Dr. Larry Vick recommended that an amended increment be added to the budget to make this goal feasible. More details about the potential program are expected to be unveiled at future meetings.

The board was also re-introduced to the possibility of implementing a Community Eligibility Option (CEO) to its program this year. This program, based on the number of families who qualify for food stamps, would offer a no cost lunch or breakfast option to students district wide. In order to implement this program district wide, however, the board would have to consider bringing Owensboro High School and possibly Owensboro Middle School into the Title 1 program, an option that the board seemed hesitant to adopt. The item was added to the agenda for the board's next monthly meeting on May 23.

The board looked at the option of implementing the Community Eligibility Option last May, but elected to put off implementing the program until a later date, due to several unanswered questions the board had concerning on how it would affect Title I, E-Rate (grant funding used for technology purposes), and SEEK funds (state monies provided for per-pupil funding) since the board could not use free/reduced lunch data collected. Also, at that time, if the board were to implement the program, it would have been left with a financial loss of approximately $290,000.

Finally, the board was introduced to an option that would allow the purchase of new eleven foot span Jacob's mower at the approximate cost of $50,000. With the acquisition of the Texas Gas property on Frederica Street, the board agreed that the purchase would be necessary to keep the districts mowing and maintenance under control. The purchase would also allow the district to reduce its maintenance staff over the next five to seven years with the addition of the new mowers.
