Outdoors with Big Country — Whitetail Deer Gun Season Begins Soon

randy camoKENTUCKY (11/2/13) — The most anticipated day of the year for thousands of avid outdoorsmen all across the Bluegrass state and more is Nov. 9.

Hunters that love the sport of hunting such as my son and I look forward to the opening day of Firearms Deer Season each year and a lot of folks vacation from work to travel to their favorite hunting area to camp in high hopes of having a successful hunt in the wilderness.

It's the tradition for many folks to get out in the Kentucky backwoods to hunt the No. 1 game animal in North America — the Whitetail deer.

With the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife setting good standards for bag limits of only one buck limit per hunter one doe has helped the deer herd explode across the state with some hunt zones having extra doe tags available for purchase after you've filled your first buck/doe tag. That idea has created an excellent deer herd management process for areas that are high in doe numbers.

The management system is a great process that keeps and prevents deer over-population. Some southern states such as Alabama have a bag limit of a deer a day for 60 days or so due to deer over-population problems.

The over-population situation there also has a detrimental effect on deer weight and health when there's an insufficient amount of food.

Kentucky has one of the best trophy buck entries into the Bonne and Crockeet records in the last few years through the midwest and has great quality of deer herds.

The most important key reminder is that I want hunters to realize is to stay focused on gun safety and to take ethical shots at the deer. Make sure to wear the orange safety vest and hat which is state law.

With opening day a week away, my suggestion is to go ahead and make your list of items needed to place in your hunting backpack such as gloves, rope, flashlight, knife, extra shirt, scent cover, first aid kit, hand wipes, deer lure, high-energy snacks, bottled water, ammo, roll of bath tissue, binoculars, trail makers, license and tags, a GPS, cell phone, walkie-talkies, deer calls and a gun cleaning kit.

I usually put these items in my backpack to take into my stand. Some items I use each trip and some I might not ever use but I have them just in case of emergency.

Another pointer is to go out and shoot your deer hunting gun in advance. Make sure your firearm is shooting where you are aiming. It's a confidence building factor and you owe it to the game to shoot to kill not to wound. As an ethical hunter, we all want to take game quickly and without suffering.

This next week, we only have a few days left to scout and for hot trails. In western Kentucky, we have a heavy white oak acorn crop this year and acorns are on the ground. The deer I've seen in the last week have been under or near a white oak tree. Deer season is a great time to get friends and family together for an outing to your favorite hunting spot.
