Outdoors with Big Country – Youth Turkey Hunting Season

sunflower 300KENTUCKY (8/28/13) – It’s that time of year already! If you’re thinking of doves and sunflowers, those go well together.

Squirrel season has been in for over a week and duck season is next up.

A good dove hunt with friends and several hunting buddies is hard to beat if you’re in a hot spot. I’m not necessarily speaking of the hot spot of the hot sun, but a hot spot in a sunflower field.

I prefer to scout the field the day before the hunt and watch as the birds fly in. I recommend setting and watching from a distance, picking a good place to park off the roadway and scouting the flyway of birds coming into your particular hunting field.

I always like to locate a dead tree that has no leaves on it, as several doves are partial to landing on a dead tree to survey the area before making a final drop into the field to feed.

A good shoot with some buddies surrounding an area is a good way to keep your wing shot in practice.

After the hunt, several doves that have been breasted out and soaked in water, prepared with a strip of bacon and your favorite seasoning and cooked on the grill is very tasty.

Just keep in mind that while you are out in the field use good judgment with low-flying birds and don’t shoot at them. I recommend that you and your partners communicate and yell, “low bird” if a bird is approaching. It’s good practice to not shoot at low birds, especially if there are hunters across the field from your spot. Don’t take the risk! Gun safety is imperative and is always the most important part of any hunting trip.

Double check your weapons and make sure that you practice pointing your gun in a safe direction at all times. Safety will get you back home, safe and sound!

If you’re a dove or a squirrel hunter, you have a hot weekend ahead. If you do venture out, go prepared by taking plenty of cool water or Gatorade drinks.

Good luck and hunt safe!
