Hundreds Spend Weekend at Countrywide 'Swingin’ for Sadie' Softball Tournament

MUHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. (7/29/13) – Hundreds of softball players and spectators from as far away as Paducah, Tennessee and Indiana spent the weekend taking part in the 2nd Annual Swingin' for Sadie Coed Softball Tournament.

Muhlenberg High School student Sadie Beth Smith lost her life in a car accident in January of 2012.

Talking to reporters Saturday morning at the Weir Ballpark, Sadie's mother, April Smith of Drakesboro, and Tonya Smith, explained that the idea to create something positive from the loss of this girl, loved by so many, came from Sadie's uncle, Tyler Smith.

"Tyler wanted to do something in Sadie's memory, and to help kids further their education." Tonya said.

Both April and Tonya Smith emphasized that education was a huge passion in Sadie's life, and all in the Smith family agreed there could not be a more appropriate way to honor her memory than by helping others further their education.

Tonya Smith noted that "Sadie was very gifted in academics, and a few weeks before her accident she had made up her mind to go to nurse practitioner school, to possibly be a medical missionary. She was all about scholarships and school. Her Uncle Tyler loves sports. God has blessed us with something good from combining these two things."

Brother Scott Casebier, of the Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, where Sadie was a member, told reporters that, "Sadie was a very special young lady. I think this is a great way to remember and honor her. By doing this we're also helping students. It's just great for the community. This event brings everyone together. Best of all, it just continues to grow."

Last year's event raised over $5000 to help Muhlenberg County students purchase supplies and other needs. This year over 20 teams participated in ball parks, literally from one end of the county in Weir, to the other end of the county in Dunmor.

Karen Robinson, one of Sadie's many friends, noted the tournament "is a great event for the scholarship purposes. Sadie loved education, she loved her church, and she just loved people."

April Smith noted that, "The sponsorship has grown this year. We're really thankful for that blessing. There have been so many businesses and individuals who have helped. I never thought the event would get this big."

Even as this year's event was still going on across the county, Sadie's mother was already planning on ways to make next year's "Swingin' For Sadie" tournament even bigger.

"Next year we plan to form committees and get organized earlier." Ms. Smith said.

Keep up with this ever-growing event on Facebook at "Swingin' For Sadie Coed Softball Tournament".
