Voter Registration Deadline Approaching for Primary 2014

Decision Dice 2 300KENTUCKY (12/18/13) — The process for selecting our political leaders can be a bit challenging for both new and experienced voters.

The concept of political parties runs contrary to common sense for many. But, that is the system we have, and voters have to adapt to the system rather than expecting the system to conform to them. Unfortunately, many citizens never vote or even register to vote because the process is so complicated.

In 2014, Kentucky voters will select most of their local, elected officials as well as state and federal legislators. On SurfKY.com, you will not be interrupted with annoying political ads going on and on. We will have political advertisements that you can view to educate yourself; plus, we will be providing as much news coverage as possible for the 2014 primary and general elections.

Right now, the one thing that you should concern yourself is getting registered to vote. Political parties select their candidates for the November General Election in an election in May. This May election is called a Primary Election. The winners of the primary election face off in the November General Election along with any independent candidates that have filed for the office.

To participate in a primary election you must select that political party when you register to vote. In other words, to vote in the Democratic primary election, you must be a registered Democrat. To vote in the Republican primary, you must be a registered Republican. If you are registered as an independent or other, you cannot vote in either Republican or Democratic primary.

When choosing party affiliation, voters are often challenged. A voter may have a friend of another party that will be facing primary opposition. That voter may need to change party so as to be able to support the friend in the primary election. Local primary elections are often won or lost by just a few votes and every vote counts.

Voters register with a particular party for various reasons. Some identify themselves based on issues with national parties. Some identify based on state or local issues and some voters choose a political party because one party dominates their local governments and the election is decided in that party's primary election.

Voters must choose their political party by Dec. 31 and register to vote accordingly. After that, it is too late to register to vote in the 2014 primary election. All registered voters can vote in the general election.
