Outdoors with Big Country – Get in the Game of Archery

bow huntingKENTUCKY (8/15/13) – With all of this nice cool weather we are currently experiencing in Kentucky, people are sure getting fired up and anxious to get into the outdoors!

Usually it is so hot this time of year that we can’t enjoy outside activities much, but with the recent cool front that’s entered the area, with temps in the 70’s, it’s the perfect weather to hang your deer stands and set trail cameras out.

Everyone that is an archery hunter should be shooting your bows some by now. Practice makes perfect! The more you shoot at different distances, the more you’re familiar with your bows’ accuracy.

Try practicing from an elevated stand that’s secure to a tree, such as the one you are in when you are hunting. Remember to always wear your safety harness, even while practicing.

On August 24, there is an open invitation to a 3-D Archery Shoot at the Kentucky Deer Classic, Kentucky’s largest and longest-running hunting event. The Deer Classic is starting at 8:30 on August 24 at the Paradise Park across the street from the Muhlenberg County Ag and Convention Center. After you shoot your range, come into the Ag and Convention Center and tour the actual Deer Classic.

Doors open at 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. The line-up this year is Kentucky’s classic Harold Knight of Knight and Hale Game Calls. Others that will be present will be Don Bell of Code Blue Deer Scents, Roger Sigler of the Antler dogs. Sigler trains Labrador Retrievers to go out and retrieve Shed Antlers.

The Big Buck profile that will be present is Thad Cartwright with his new world record velvet 50 pointer non-typical buck that Buckmasters BTR scored at a net of 273 inches.

Also, the highlight of the classic is the Wall of Fame booth, where local hunters display their trophy bucks in a People’s Choice Contest.

There are several great booths there this year. Along with Uncle Lee’s booth, there will be others such as Extreme Taxidermy, Groves Crafts and Cornhole Boards, the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife and more. SurfKY News will have a booth alongside Jess Graham and his outdoor crew, The Kentucky Redneck Outdoors, www.kyredneckoutdoors.com, a local outdoors group that travels around Kentucky and is quickly gathering a huge fan base across the nation.

It’s an excellent event for the entire family to come out to.

Also, don’t forget the huge tent sale at Uncle Lees!

Along with all this, you can get your bow tuned up and get motivated and ready for the upcoming bow season. This season officially opens on September 7th.

Hope to see you all there at the Kentucky Deer Classic!
