UK HealthCare Spreads Holiday Cheer Through Music

uk healthcare 300LEXINGTON, Ky. (12/6/13) – As many Lexingtonians are celebrating the holiday season at home with their family and friends, some are not so fortunate. Many patients at UK hospital will be spending the holidays working to regain their health. Thus, UK HealthCare is working to bring the Christmas spirit to them through holiday music throughout the hospital.

Jason Akhtarekhavari works with administrative support for arts in HealthCare and music therapy. He said every Monday through Friday in December, different musicians will be performing Christmas music throughout the hospital mostly around the noon to 1 p.m. hour.

UK HealthCare's Jay Zwischenberger, MD, will perform at 1 p.m. Dec. 12 in Pavillion A of Chandler Hospital. Carolers from the Deep Springs Elementary School will be performing at noon Dec. 13 in Pavillion A of Chandler Hospital. Carolers from the UK Opera Theatre will perform several times in December throughout the UK Chandler Hospital, Good Samaritan Hospital and the Kentucky Clinic.

“There may not be a performance at every location every day, but there's at least one performance every day,” said Akhtarekhavari.

Akhtarekhavari added that each year, the hospital has more and more volunteers, who want to perform at the hospital.

“This year, I've been getting bombarded with volunteers that want to come and play just because they've been before or they've told someone else. It's building this community of volunteer performers,” said Akhtarekhavari.

But, the music isn't just for the patients. Akhtarekhavari said the music will have an impact on the staff as well.

“Around that noon to one hour, a lot of the staff will take their lunch and there's several seating areas. They'll sit there and eat there lunch and enjoy the music,” said Akhtarekhavari. “You can imagine just having 30 minutes away. If you're a nurse working on a hectic ICU unit, to step out in to that lobby, which is already a beautiful place with a lot of art, and just have some music and eat your lunch and relax, a lot of people don't get that in their workplace.”

The hospital will also have carolers in on Christmas Eve as well as a volunteer group on Christmas day.
