The Tonight Show Debuts with Newer, Cooler Vibes

fallon(Photo courtesy YouTube)MADISONVILLE, Ky. (2/24/14) - The Tonight Show, once a program for boomers, received a total transformation last week with younger, looser host, Jimmy Fallon.

Fallon pulled through with a strong first week, averaging 8.5 million viewers a night, according to Hollywood Reporter–more than double the prior season-to-date average.

Fallon carries fans on his back from his stint at Late Night and also his six years on Saturday Night Live.

Some say he is trying to appeal to a younger crowd–18-49–where Tonight jumped from a 3.8 rating to a 4.9 rating, the highest since Jay Leno’s 1992 debut.

But, why is Fallon considered more relatable to the younger crowd than Leno?

It could be the fact that Fallon has a ton of high-profile, more modern celebrity friends like Justin Timberlake.

Last week, Fallon continued his and Timberlake’s hit musical number, History of Rap, showing viewers that not only has humor on his side; he can keep up musically as well.

Fallon brought Will Smith to the show to act out “The Evolution of Hip-Hop Dancing”, again targeting the 18-49 age group.

Fallon seems to be able to do it all, including putting major celebrities in situations where they totally embarrass themselves.

Last week in Fallon’s continued sketch “Celebrity Charades”, Bradley Cooper, Emma Thompson, and Tim McGraw acted out situations–somewhat poorly–to win the game. Fallon even welcomed Michelle Obama last week who poked fun at herself in the sketch, “Ew”.

Fellow SNL alum, Seth Meyers will replace Fallon on Late Night tonight, but most say that his best character has always been himself anyway. Meyers has been a long-time writer on the Saturday night show and Weekend Update, starring as himself, and is who most will recognize him from.

Will Fallon continue his highly-rated numbers in his second week?

Only viewers will decide.

Tune into Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show 10 p.m. Central Time on NBC.
