Conway to Raise Awareness About Medicaid Fraud and Elder Abuse Prevention at State Fair

j conway 300FRANKFORT, Ky. (8/14/14) — Attorney General Jack Conway and his staff will raise awareness about Medicaid fraud and elder abuse prevention at this year's Kentucky State Fair, which runs from Aug. 14 to Aug. 24 at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center in Louisville.

"My office is dedicated to protecting our most vulnerable citizens and prosecuting those individuals who commit Medicaid fraud, but we need the help of all Kentuckians," Attorney General Conway said. "If you're attending the Kentucky State Fair this year, I hope you will stop by our booth in the South Wing to learn more about how we can all work together to help keep our most vulnerable citizens safe."

The Office of the Attorney General's booth, located in the "Kidz Biz" section of the South Wing, will have information and giveaway items to promote Attorney General Conway's efforts to combat Medicaid fraud and elder abuse and encourage Kentuckians to join his efforts.

Elder abuse may occur in many forms - physical, financial, emotional, neglect, or abandonment - and several types of abuse are often inflicted at the same time. As Kentucky's population ages and the number of nursing home residents grows, it is important to be familiar with the signs of elder abuse, which can include unexplained injuries, malnutrition, lost or stolen property or a fear of being alone with a caregiver.

Additionally, the abuse, neglect, or exploitation of any patient or resident of a health care facility or personal care home is a crime, and Kentucky law requires anyone who suspects that a person has suffered abuse to report it to authorities. Citizens are urged to do so by calling the Attorney General's tip line at (877)-ABUSE TIP.

"I encourage you to spread the word about our tip line," General Conway said. "This important hotline allows friends, relatives, and concerned citizens to report suspected abuse directly to my investigators. If you or someone you know believes a vulnerable adult has been abused, neglected, or exploited, please don't hesitate to pick up the phone and report it immediately."

For more information about recognizing and preventing patient abuse, as well as how to report suspected Medicaid fraud, visit ag.ky.gov or call (877) ABUSE TIP.

Since being elected Attorney General, Conway has quadrupled elder abuse and neglect investigations, prosecuting more cases than any previous Attorney General.

The Medicaid Fraud and Abuse Control Unit

In addition to investigating patient abuse allegations, Attorney General Conway's Medicaid Fraud and Abuse Control Unit investigates provider fraud. Providers include anyone who bills the Kentucky Medicaid program for health care goods or services provided to a Medicaid recipient.

Since Attorney General Conway took office in January 2008, his Medicaid Fraud and Abuse Control Unit has recovered or been awarded more than $260 million dollars for the state and federal Medicaid programs. These cases range from lawsuits and settlements against pharmaceutical companies to cases against individual providers.

In 2013, General Conway's Medicaid Fraud Unit was named one of the most aggressive in the country by the nonprofit watchdog group Public Citizen.
