September is National Baby Safety Month

baby2 300FRANKFORT, Ky. (9/5/13) – Tis the season to make babies and most importantly, keeping our babies safe. The month of September celebrates National Baby Safety Month.

With this in mind, SurfKY News would like to share a few tips with our readers on baby safety.

Since our babies spend most of their day sleeping, it’s important that we stay focused on a safe sleep environment which will help reduce the risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Syndrome).

It’s always important to remember to clean all the clutter from your baby’s crib such as; baby bumper pads, pillows, blankets and stuffed toys. You always want to use a firm mattress and avoid the use of positioners and other products that claim to reduce the risk of SIDS. You also want to make sure that you check all baby products to make sure they meet federal safety standards.

Make sure when you are putting your little one down for the night or even for a nap, that the baby is always placed on its back. You should also make sure that your baby is wearing comfortable weather appropriate clothing so you don’t have to bundle them with too many blankets. However, do not let your baby overheat. Keep room temperatures between 68-72 degrees Fahrenheit.

Do not allow smoking around your baby. It’s not like the baby can get up and move to another room to avoid the smoke.

Always remember to check on your baby frequently.

Car safety is also hugely important parental responsibility. The best protection, keep your baby in a rear-facing child safety seat in the backseat for as long as you possibly can. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends keeping children rear –facing up at least until your child’s second birthday or until they have reached the height or weight limit of the seat.

Remember, your child is the future of our world. Take every precautionary measure to make sure he or she is safe as humanly possible.
