Outdoors with Big Country – May is Outdoor Time

KENTUCKY (5/9/13) – The month of May is a great time to be in the outdoors. Fish are spawning, or in pre-spawn, depending upon species.

You can either cast a crankbait for Largemouth Bass or cast a Redworm baited under a bobber for big bullhead bluegill, or rig up a #4 circle hook with cutbait and try your luck for cattish!
 
May is a very versatile time to go out fishing. There is a lot of good fishing in various waters. If you do go out, the rivers are high due to the recent rains, so be careful in river tributaries. Remember to always wear you PFD’s.
 
When fishing in May, I recommend that if you are looking to catch just anything for fun, try taking several different fishing poles. The Crappie biting is still going on near brush and structure. Minnows or small jigs work great on catching crappie.
 
For bluegill, just about any bait similar to a bug or a small jig will work. Crickets, red worms, and mill worms are great for bluegill and redears.
 
If you are a more artificial bait oriented angler, try a Rooster Tail 1/16 oz. Also, you could try a 1/32 oz. crappie jig, or you may try an artificial plug that looks like a cricket. The small artificial crickets that Shelton Jigs are making and stocking at Uncle Lee’s are excellent. I’ve used the brown color cricket bait and caught several bluegill on it without changing baits. When the fish are on, it’s my tip to use an artificial bait, such as Shelton’s jigs cricket, so the action is fast and furious.
 
For May bass, I prefer to cast a plug similar to a crawfish, and red always works great. Any plug that simulates a small minnow works great as well.
 
Remember to introduce a kid to fishing this Spring. In Muhlenberg County, there will be a great event scheduled for June 8th at Luzerne Lake. This “Take a Kid Fishing” event will be on Saturday, June 8, from 9:00-1:00, with several great prizes and lots of fun.
