Keith Hayes Advances in USA 110h Championship

uk trackb 300LEXINGTON, Ky. (6/24/13) – Keith Hayes continued his breakout season by advancing to the United States Track and Field Championships 110-meter hurdles semifinal on Saturday inside Drake Stadium. Hayes lowered his Kentucky all-conditions record to 13.30 in the process.
 
The four-time All-American dealt well with a +4.1 meters per second tailwind to advance as the No. 5 qualifier into Sunday’s semifinal round. The senior finished second in his prelim heat, ahead of 2012 Olympic Silver Medalist Jason Richardson.
 
Hayes’ semifinal heat will go off at 3:40 p.m. ET on Sunday, and should he advance the final will be at 5:52 p.m.
 
Rebecca Famurewa won the U.S. Junior Championship Silver Medal in the discus throw with a top mark 52.39m/171’10”. The rising sophomore’s finish earned her a spot on the 2013 U.S. team that will compete at the 2013 Pan Am Junior Games in Medellin, Colombia August 23 –25.
 
Kentucky alumna Kristin Smith, the school-record holder in the hammer throw, finished 8th in the US HT Championship with a top mark 66.96m/219'8"
 
Multiple former international Wildcats are also competing at their National Championships this weekend.
 
UK alumus Mikel Thomas won the Trinidad and Tobago 110m hurdles Championship clocking a time of 13.29w (+3.0). Thomas, a two-time Olympian, was the UK-record holder before Hayes.
 
He defeated 2013 NCAA Champion Wayne Davis II (Texas A&M) by .01 seconds. Thomas set the T&T 110m hurdles record with a time of 13.19 two weeks ago.
 
Former Wildcat Jenna Martin, a 2012 Olympian, was runner-up in the Canada 400m Championship with a time of 52.97.
 
Rondel Sorrillo, a two-time Olympian and 2010 NCAA 200m Champion, finished third in the T&T 100m final, as he ran 9.99w (+3.2). Sorrillo will also be one of the favorites for the T&T 200m Championship on Sunday.
 
The top three finishers in each event at the USA Senior Outdoor Championships that have met the “A” qualifying standard in their respective events will represent the U.S. at the IAAF World Championships in Moscow this summer.
 
The 2013 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships will feature live television coverage on Sunday on Universal Sports from 2-3 p.m., NBC Sports Network from 3-4 p.m. and NBC from 4-6 p.m.
 
USA Track & Field will also provide live streaming video at www.usatf.tv for selected events Sunday from 8 a.m.-6 p.m.
 
Four members of UK’s 2013 team – recent graduate Hayes, Kayla Parker (100-meter hurdles) and Andrew Evans (discus) and Famurewa – all competed at the USA Championships.
 
Four UK alumni – Sharif Webb (800m), Chase Madison (discus), Andy Fryman (hammer) and Smith (hammer) – were also in the USA Championships field.
 
Webb, the UK school-record holder in the event, placed 24th in the 800m first round with a time of 1:50.10.
 
Also in the USA Championship field was current staff member and former All-American at Wisconsin Ann Detmer. The UK track and field graduate assistant ran 10:35.02 for 26th overall in the 3,000m steeplechase first round.
 
UK volunteer assistant coach Arantxa King, a 2012 Olympian for Bermuda, competed in the Jamaican Long Jump Championship in Kingston on Friday.
