KENTUCKY (7/12/14) — Looking for something to do with the family, inside, on a hot summer day?
If so, our “Science Guy” Jason Lindsey shows us how to use a few ingredient from around the house to create homemade ice cream.
- 1/2 Cup Half & Half
- 1 Tablespoon Sugar
- 1/4 Teaspoon Vanilla
- 1 Sandwich Ziploc Bag
- 1 Gallon Ziploc Bag
- 3 Cups of Crushed Ice
- 1/3 Cup Rock Salt
- STEP 1: Place the Half & Half, sugar, and vanilla into the sandwich Ziploc bag. Seal the sandwich Ziploc bag.
- STEP 2: Place the ice and rock salt into the gallon Ziploc bag. Add the sandwich Ziploc bag into the gallon Ziploc bag. Seal the gallon Ziploc bag.
- STEP 3: Squeeze the gallon Ziploc bag until the ice cream thickens.
- STEP 4: Remove the sandwich Ziploc bag from the gallon Ziploc bag. Open the sandwich Ziploc bag, using a spoon, taste your homemade ice cream.
The salt lowers the freezing point of the ice and creates a cold brine, which absorbs the heat from the bag containing the Half & Half, sugar, and vanilla. This causes the contents in the bag containing the Half & Half, sugar, and vanilla to go from a liquid to a solid, creating homemade ice cream.
