Thousands Expected at Kentucky Deer Classic

deer classic 300MUHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. (8/22/13) – Since the late 1980’s hunting enthusiasts have waited eagerly each year for two things. First, and foremost, is the start of hunting season. Next is the Annual Kentucky Deer Classic.

This Saturday, August 24th, from 8am to 4pm, sportsmen will mark the 25th anniversary of The Kentucky Deer Classic, an event that brings hunters from across the country to Muhlenberg County.

In the early days the event was held at Uncle Lee's Sporting Goods, but the crowds quickly grew to a size that now jams hunters shoulder to shoulder in the Muhlenberg Agricultural and Convention Center on the Highway 189 Bypass.

One could not think of a better lineup to celebrate the silver anniversary of this unequaled event. This year top names in hunting include Harold Knight, co-founder of Knight & Hale, which redefined the hunting industry with innovative products such as the original Fight n’ Purr turkey call and the patented inhale-exhale operation of the EZGrunter Plus grunt call, which allows hunters to create the hyperventilating tending grunt. Harold has won many national calling contests during his time on the circuit, including the World Goose Calling Championship. Even though he's retired from competing on the circuit, this master of turkey calling is still a judge and a lifetime member of the National Wild Turkey Federation. Harold remains active as both hunter and host of Sheffield Financials Ultimate Hunting television show. For 27 years the show has been one of the most popular hunting shows on TV since its inception as Woods and Wetlands.

Also on hand will be Don Bell, founder of Code Blue™ Deer Scents, and the hunting industries foremost scent specialist, introducing his newest deer scents; Top Secret and Red Light District. Top Secret is collected without oxygen from the time the deer urinates, through collection, bottling and is oxygen free sitting on the shelf of your favorite retailer. This patent pending collection process is a complete generation above Code Blue.

Muhlenberg County resident, Thad Cartwright, an avid bow hunter, is guaranteed to draw a huge crowd after he earned official World Record Buck status for his very large, and very unusual, velvet buck. The buck was measured by Steve Lucas of BTR Buckmasters in the Archery Category, and is the new world record buck. This deer had a gross measurement score of 273 2/8 inch. On top of that, Cartwright has also won the Golden Laurel Citation Award in the Buckmasters records books. This award is given for the best buck and best story of the actual hunt. Only one buck per year is chosen for this award across the United States. Mr. Cartwright's world-record buck will be on display.

Kentucky Redneck Outdoors (KRO), a fairly new and very popular local group of outdoorsmen, will also be at the Deer Classic. The KRO crew is as country as one could possibly be, with a motto of, “Where country meets crazy”. The KRO main staff, Wildcat Scott Graham, Doctor Doug, and Jess Graham, will be sharing a booth with SurfKY News and selling chances to win several outdoors-related items, with half the proceeds going towards helping the family of Tyler Foster, a young man that has been battling cancer for some time now.

“Tyler has been an inspiration to so many people,” said KRO’s Wildcat Scott. “We consider it an honor to be able to help out this young man, and plan to have other fundraisers in the near future for other local children and families going through similar situations. That’s the way it’s done in the country. When your neighbor needs help, you help them!”

SurfKY famed sports expert and columnist, Randy Adams, AKA "Big Country" says this will be his 16th visit to the Kentucky Deer Classic and his fourth year working at the Big Buck Wall of Fame. "Big Country" told SurfKY Reporters "there'll also be over one hundred exhibitor booths featuring hunting equipment, dozens of door prizes and free samples. Between having lecturers like Harold Knight, Don Bell, and Thad Cartwright, all together at one show, this is going to be one show you don't want to miss."

Big Country said he's also looking forward to the Antler Dogs Roger Sigler Seminar and Exhibit.

"He trains Labradors to go out and retrieve shed antlers. This is something that's really spread through the Midwest, and is really becoming popular all over. That’s just like having another trophy in your hand." Big Country said.

There are also games for the kids, including Bandit Cross Bow, Paintball, and a B-B Gun Shootout, and you can test your skills with the 3-D Archery Shoot Open Invitation. Contact Tommy Moore at 270-836-2495 for details on this specific event.

The event is sponsored by the Greater Muhlenberg Chamber of Commerce.
