Highway deaths 02 navy 300FRANKFORT, KY (8/19/13) – The following is your weekly update of incident statistics on Kentucky roadways over the past week, courtesy of the Kentucky State Police.
 
Preliminary statistics indicate that four people died in three separate crashes on Kentucky’s roadways from Monday, Aug. 12 through Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013.
 
One double-fatality, motor vehicle crash occurred in Hardin County. The crash involved the suspected use of alcohol.

One single-fatality, motor vehicle crash occurred in Marion County. The crash involved the suspected use of alcohol.

One single fatality, motorcycle crash occurred in Johnson County. The crash involved the suspected use of alcohol and the victim was not wearing a helmet.

Through Aug. 18, preliminary statistics indicate that 395 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2013. This is 78 less than reported for this time period in 2012. Of the 303 motor vehicle fatalities, 154 victims were not wearing seat belts. Thirty-eight of the 56 motorcycle fatalities were not wearing helmets. The six ATV fatalities were not wearing helmets. One bicycle rider has been killed. Twenty-eight pedestrians have been killed. One fatality involving an animal drawn vehicle has been reported. A total of 84 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol. As of Aug. 18, Kentucky has had 55 days with zero highway fatalities reported during 2013.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555. Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
 
These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
