cc tourism2 300MUHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. (1/12/14) — Plans are underway for a memorial service in Central City to honor Phil Everly, who died on Jan. 3 at the age of 74.

Everly, with his brother Don, were known worldwide as the Everly Brothers and penned a long list of chart-topping songs. He died from complications attributed to pulmonary disease in Burbank, Calif.

Everly was born in Chicago on Jan. 19, 1939, but his extended family lived in Central City.

In 1988, the duo began a series of concerts known as The Everly Brothers Homecoming, which brought a host of stars to Central City each year. These concerts continued through 2001 and helped raise funds to construct the Madisonville Community College's Muhlenberg Campus, as well as provide scholarships to many of the county's high school students.

Members of the Everly Brothers Foundation, the Muhlenberg County Everly Brothers Fan Club and the Central City Tourism Commission are teaming up to host a program they are calling “Phil Everly, a Celebration of Life” at 2 p.m. on Jan. 18 at the Merle Travis Center, located at 750 Cleaton Road, Powderly, Ky.

The program will feature music from Tim Giageos and David Everly, both cousins of the Everly Brothers and a live tribute band. Speakers will include Muhlenberg County Circuit Court Judge Brian Wiggins, who is a past recipient of one of the scholarships, and Marilyn Kirtley, a founding member of the fan club.

Central City Tourism Commission Director Carmel Rich is working on displays of memorabilia that will be featured in the lobby at the Merle Travis Center during the memorial. She is also the curator of the Everly Brothers museum at the Tourism Commission office in Central City. It is the home to a large collection of records, photos and keepsakes of the Everly's career. For more information about the memorial program or the Everly Brothers museum, call the Central City Tourism Commission at )270) 754-9603.
