UK Women’s Swimming and Diving Team Earns Nation’s Top GPA

UK diving 300LEXINGTON, Ky. (7/10/14) — Academic honors keep on pouring in for the University of Kentucky women’s swimming and diving team, as it earned the nation’s best grade-point average among all Division I men’s and women’s team and was named one of the 2014 Spring CSCAA Scholar All-America Teams.

The recognition, announced by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America Thursday, comes after the team earned a 3.728 GPA, best among all University of Kentucky teams.

“I’m really proud of our women’s team for all their hard work in the classroom this year, this is a tremendous honor,” UK head coach Lars Jorgensen said. “I believe that a team’s GPA is a reflection of your work ethic, and there isn’t a team in the country that works harder than they do, both in and out of the pool, and this demonstrates that."

“This wouldn’t be possible without Bob Bradley and his staff in CATS (Center for Academic and Tutorial Services) and their dedication to our student-athletes. Our team captains have been great leaders as well.”

The Team Scholar All American Award is presented by the CSCAA to college and university swimming and diving teams who have achieved a team GPA of 3.0 or higher. The award is presented twice annually, once in the fall semester and again in the spring, to recognize teams achieving a 3.0 in the semester coinciding with the NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA/CCCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.

Also this spring, junior swimmer Abby Myers was named to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-District® At-Large Team. An Honorable Mention All-American this season, Myers was one of 10 honorees on the Division I team in District 2 and just one of six women’s swimmers from the Southeastern Conference to be named to an Academic All-District team.

“The academic success the team had this spring is a great way to cap an exciting year after their first top-25 finish at the NCAA Championships since 2008,” Jorgensen added. “We look forward to maintaining this level of excellence in the classroom for years to come as we continue to move the program forward athletically.”

The UK women are coming off a 23rd-place finish at the NCAA Championships, their highest finish at the national championship since 2008. Junior Christa Cabot earned two All-America honors with a pair of top-11 finishes in the diving events. Fellow junior Christina Bechtel was named All-American for the first time in her career when she notched a fifth-place finish in the 200 butterfly with a school-record time, while Myers was named Honorable Mention All-American when she finished 12th in the 200 butterfly.
