My Kentucky Roads: Rissa’s Place

rissa

KENTUCKY (2/22/14) — Just shy of four months of being open, Rissa’s Place is already making an impact on small town Sebree with its delicious home cooking and welcoming service.

“I always wanted to start my own diner deal,” said owner Clarissa Moseley, “like a little hamburger joint. Then, one day, my daughter called me about a place in Madisonville that was for lease, which happened to be at the very same restaurant I use to work at called South Main Restaurant.”

Moseley said she worked for South Main Restaurant for eight years, and learned the ins and outs of how to cook and run a business.

“I did just about everything there,” said Moseley. “The Vandergriffs taught me everything I know. I waited tables, cooked, did the dishes; you name it, I did it all.”

After receiving the call from her daughter about the old restaurant, she decided to open up shop and renamed the business to “Family Diner.” She ran her dream there for 13 years until the passing of her mother and decided to move to Sebree.

“After 13 years, I decided to move back here to Sebree to be closer to my dad,” said Moseley. “We did some renovations to this building, and this past November we finally opened the doors here.”

Moseley said there isn’t much to do in the small town, so, she started karaoke nights on Saturdays to give the people in the community something to do.

“We had our first karaoke night a couple weeks ago,” said Moseley. “We had a packed house. All ages, who want to sing or watch people sing, are welcome. We are going to try to do another karaoke night on Feb. 22, and if all goes well, I am looking into having live music sometime, too.”

Moseley said since the weather has been pretty bad, they have had to cut back on the food and hours.

“I just don’t see the point in making all that food and it going to waste,” said Moseley. “It takes a lot of work to make things from scratch.”

Rissa’s is best known for the club sandwiches, meatloaf, chili, and the “Double Decker Patty Melt.”

“We sell a lot of grill orders here,” said Mosely. “There really isn’t a place like this around here. I also try and switch up my dinners on Sundays. I do make a marinated pot roast most Sundays, which sells pretty fast. I also make my chili, soups, slaw dressing, morning gravy and certain desserts from scratch.”

Rissa’s Place is located 7131 State Route 56 E. Sebree.
