Future of Mid-Continent University in Limbo

MCU header logo loginMAYFIELD, Ky. (2/25/14) ― Students, faculty and school officials at Mid-Continent University in Mayfield are waiting to see if recent submissions to the Department of Education ease some of the financial crisis that could cause the university to close its doors.

The university has spent $9 million of its own funds in the last five months toward student educational costs due to the Department of Education's rejection of federal financial aid submissions, and it needs another $6 million to make it through the spring semester to graduation.

Former Mid-Continent President Robert Imhoff has resigned and the MCU Board of Trustees appointed Dr. Ken Winters in his place Saturday.

Mid-Continent University is a private, not-for-profit, four-year liberal arts Christian institution in Graves County with approximately 2,400 students. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools placed MCU's accreditation on a “warning” status in December due to its financial instability.

According to MCU officials, the Department of Education found mistakes in financial aid submission information and have been kicking those submissions back for several months

In a Youtube video of Winters' address to the community Monday, he said he remains optimistic about the future of the school and its students. He said what happens in the near future will be crucial to the university.

“There is a situation at Mid-Continent that demands major attention for the next few weeks,” Winters said in his address. “Part of this is due to the fact Mid-Continent is a non-term institution and that's a different format. Therefore the reporting is different.”

Winters said he and a group of officials met with U.S. Rep. Ed Whitfield, R-Hopkinsville, in Washington, D.C. about the university's problems, and that Whitfield called in U.S. Under Secretary of Education Martha Kanter to discuss the predicament.

“We are extremely encouraged by the discussion with the under secretary,” said Winters.

Winters, a former state Senator, said he will do all that he can to ensure a good future for the school and its students in his brief term as an acting president.
