Central City Mayor Shaver Credits Employees for Success

Shavers Body Shop 500Barry Shaver and employees. Shavers Body Shop, Central City, Ky.
CENTRAL CITY, Ky. (2/25/14) – Barry Shaver is a busy man, to say the least.

As the mayor of Central City, and owner and operator of Shaver's Body Shop in Central city, this Muhlenberg County native manages to handle it all, and still have time for his favorite pastime, getting out and enjoying nature.

"I love to just get outdoors and hunt, fish, and spend time at our family cabin on the lake," Shaver said.

Shaver, the son of Delmas and Ann shaver, graduated from Muhlenberg Central High School, before following his father's path into the coal mining industry.

Shaver says he loved coal mining, but car restoration was in his blood.

"My grandfather was a mechanic," Shaver Said."I picked up a lot of valuable knowledge from him. I also used to love to help my uncle with his car body repair business. When I was 15 years old, I restored my first vehicle."

Shaver finally left his job in the mines and when full time in auto body repair and restoration in 1986.

"I just loved doing body work full time. As business began to pick up, I hired one or two people, and we have just grown from there," Shaver said.

In 1995, Shaver's Body Shop moved to the former Lester Chevrolet location. When business grew even more, Shaver moved to the present location at 321 West Reservoir Street in Central City.

So how does Shaver juggle the many responsibilities of running a business with the many duties involved in being the mayor of Central City?

"I have been very fortunate in finding good people who know how to do a good job," Shaver said. "What makes a good business is good employees. Period."

"I truly believe the key to being able to handle both jobs has been having great employees here at the body shop, and also those I oversee in our city government."

As far as his first love of car restoration, Shaver said he is most proud of the job his crew did on an all-American favorite, a vintage 1955 Chevy.

"I feel we have had a lot of cars we can be proud of as far as restoration, but if I had to pick one, it would be a 1955 2-door Chevy we worked on for Central City resident Tony Harper. It hits the spot," Shaver said.

Shaver noted that he's not afraid to take a good idea from a customer.

"We really were strictly an auto body shop for years, but one day a customer said it was a shame they had to go somewhere else to get their car fixed, after having the body work done at Shaver's. That day a light when on. We hired some top of the line mechanics, and since then we have developed into a highly successful repair service as well," Shaver said.
