DCPS Holds Off On DataSeam

dcps3 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (9/20/13) - The approval of the implementation of the KY DataSeam Initiative was voted upon in Thursday night’s Daviess County Public Schools Board of Education Meeting.

Tony Sparks brought the idea to the board luncheon on Tuesday where concerns about the privacy of the users were expressed, but Sparks made sure the members knew at Thursday’s meeting that there shouldn’t be any worries for the project.

"We’re fine, we’re good to go," Sparks said.

However, the Board decided against complete support of the initiative until they had more information. The motion to approve contingent on further review was approved.

In other business, 84 students were recognized as AP Scholars in the meeting. This was a record number for the district. Parents of former seniors and students alike were given certificates to recognize their high achievement

"I’m always thrilled to see students with us (at the meetings)," Superintendent Owens Saylor said.

Attendance in the first month of school was up in the district. Overall the district had 97.17 percent attendance and 10,936 students enrolled. The high attendance award winners of the month were Apollo High School with 96.15 percent in attendance, Burns Middle School and College View Middle School with 97.25 percent in attendance, and Whitesville Elementary with 98.79 percent in attendance. Superintendent Saylor stressed the importance of attendance.

"Learning begins by simply being there," Saylor said.

Several kids from Sorgho Elementary School gave a presentation on the success of the Leader In Me program. Leader In Me is based on Stephen R. Covell’s ‘Seven Habits of Highly Effective People’, and gives the children the ability to teach, learn, and manage on their own. Currently, nine schools in the DCPS district have implemented the program.

The 2013-2014 budget was discussed in Thursday’s meeting. The budget has been adjusted to reflect actual tax and SEEK (per-pupil state funding) revenues, which have drastically decreased. The budget wasn’t laid out in the meeting, but members said they expect the adjustment to be based on levied tax rates.

"Things are going to have to change. We can’t continue down this path," Board Chairman Frank G. Riney III said.

The next DCPS Board of Education luncheon will be held on Oct. 15 at 11:45 a.m.
