mathcounts 300HOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. (12/23/13) — Mathcounts is a national enrichment, coaching and competition program designed for 6-8 graders that are interested in math. The program is led by the National Society of Professional Engineers.

With more than 30 years of experience, Mathcounts has become one of the country’s largest and most successful partnerships that involve educators, volunteers, industry sponsors and students. Mathcounts has also received two White House citations as an outstanding private sector initiative.

“The local Green River Chapter region that I cover each year with our MATHCOUNTS competition includes quite a few Kentucky counties, which includes Hopkins County,” said David Topolenski, Green River Chapter KSPE president and Mathcounts coordinator. “In fact, we used to hold our competition each year at Madisonville Community College.

Our region covers Christian, Daviess, Hancock, Henderson, Hopkins, McLean, Muhlenberg, Ohio, Todd, Union and Webster counties.

Each year, more than 500,000 students participate in Mathcounts at a school level and provide students with many benefits, like how to take exams under pressure, make better results on ACT tests and have a better opportunity for qualifying for scholarships.

Topolenski has been trying over the past several years to get students from the Hopkins County area to participate in this competition, but is having a hard time getting students motivated. He is also hoping to entice the school systems as well.

“I am desperately trying to drum up some interest in our area,” said Topolenski. “Sadly, in the few years that I have been involved with MATHCOUNTS, I have not been able to entice one school or student to participate in the competition.”

In the state of Kentucky, an estimated 9,000 students are exposed to Mathcounts’ materials, either through participating in the program or receiving instruction in the classroom that incorporates Mathcounts into a curriculum.

This past February, 836 students participated in the Kentucky Chapter program and 155 were able to advance to compete in the state competition.

The prizes for the winners are very substantial and Mathletes have a rare opportunity to compete for college scholarships, which Ky. is one of the very few states that provide scholarships, especially a four-year, full-tuition college scholarship.

“For the past two years in a row, we have given away full scholarships as the top prize, not bad for sixth through eighth grades,” said Topolenski. “We have also given away literally thousands of dollars in other prize scholarships.”

The next Mathcounts competition will take place Saturday, Feb. 15 at the Wesleyan College in Owensboro.

“It is not too late for students or schools to register, and I can even call/visit any interested teachers/schools/students in Hopkins County to discuss the program,” said Topolenski. “I am local and available to help anybody out with any questions they may have on the program.”
