Eclipse 1HENDERSON COUNTY, Ky. (7/28/17) — Teachers at Henderson County Schools are preparing for the Aug. 21 total solar eclipse.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the disk of the moon appears to cover completely the disk of the sun in the sky. Many areas in Kentucky including Henderson will provide great viewing opportunities for this rare astronomical event.

The total solar eclipse will be at maximum coverage in Henderson at 1:24 p.m. A group of teachers have been meeting to plan interdisciplinary activities to help students understand this rare occurrence.

“We believe this is an opportune teaching moment for our students," said Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning Jo Swanson. "We have been looking at different ways to incorporate the eclipse into our curriculum. NASA has provided an online toolkit which has been a great resource for our teachers."

Eclipse activity books for elementary school classrooms have been ordered, and all students in Henderson County Schools will receive a pair of solar eclipse glasses to safely view the event.

“We are also working with Henderson Community College on how to arrange for some of our students to attend the lecture and viewing party at the Preston Arts Center,” Swanson adds.

Henderson County Schools will continue to provide updates and coverage of eclipse activities planned across the district through social media and the school website.
