Richmond JennyHENDERSON, Ky. (8/7/17) — As the school countdown begins, Henderson Police Department urges people to be mindful of buses with precious cargo making stops along highways and offers tips in keeping children safe to and from home.

Classes start Wednesday in all Henderson County Schools.

HPD Public Information Officer Jennifer Richmond said parents should make sure children know which bus to hop on, precautions if students walk to and from school and having a parent or guardian’s phone number with them at all times.

“Sometimes the simple things are forgotten with the excitement of a new routine,” Richmond wrote in a news release.

HPD also asks that drivers slow down and stop where required as children enter and exit buses. Officers will be on the lookout in school zones to ensure posted speed limits are followed.

As many parents transport children to school this week, police encourage drivers to leave 15 minutes early and be prepared for traffic congestion in school zone areas.

“Make sure your student knows where they will go after school and have a rule that they contact you as soon as they arrive home,” Richmond said. “Teach them to check the home for safety concerns (windows/doors locked with no visible damage).”
