Henderson Seal 01 300HENDERSON, Ky. (9/12/17) — Two crews and a supervisor from Henderson Municipal Power and Light have mobilized to assist with restoring electrical service in the state of Florida.

More than 3.3 million homes and businesses were left in the dark over the weekend when the massive Hurricane Irma plowed across the length of Florida, impacting most of the state. Florida Power & Light said it will likely be weeks before electricity is fully restored.

HMPL General Manager Chris Heimgartner said he expects his personnel to be assisting with power restoration for about two weeks. They are stationed at Gainesville, Florida.

The local utility is part of a mutual aid network. Crews began staging in strategic areas long before Irma passed through, awaiting their assignments for deployment after the storm, according to the American Public Power Association.

In addition to Kentucky, mutual aid crews from Texas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia and New England have responded.
