On Feb. 19, MFD received an alarm from Central Dispatch for report of field fire near Rose Creek and Bean Cemetery Road. Upon arrival, crews were met by Nebo Fire Department and found a brush pile actively burning. The owner was not on-scene at the time, but had a valid burn permit on file. Crew verified that there was little possibility of fire spread, but noted that the wind was stirring up flying embers. The owner was contacted and notified of the situation and requested to stay at the scene to monitor the fire. The scene was deemed safe and all units returned to station without incident.

Also on Feb. 19, MFD received a call at Station 1 via public service from a resident at 218 N. Church Street, requesting to have an air-quality check. Engine 17 responded, and upon arrival, was met by the resident on the front porch. The resident advised he was trying to dry wood out on the top of his wood stove when it ignited and fell down melting the carpet in the area of the wood stove. The resident was concerned about the possible gases the burning carpet might have let off in the air. Air quality was monitored using multi-gas detector, and the area of burned carpet was checked using a thermal imaging camera, with nothing detected by either. The resident was advised that if any other concerns occurred to call back. No further action was taken and the unit returned to service.

On Feb. 19, MFD received an alarm from Central Dispatch for a report of black smoke coming from behind Fortner LP Gas Company. Upon arrival crew found nothing showing. Arriving units reported white smoke in the distance. Units proceeded to Rose Creek and Bean Cemetery Rd. and found the source of the smoke to be a controlled burn. The fire crew was met by the owner who had a valid burn permit on file. The crew verified that all conditions of the burn permit were being met. The scene was deemed safe and all units returned to station without incident.

On Feb. 19, MFD received a call via public service from a resident at 340 Caroline St., advising they were having a problem with an electrical outlet and wanted the fire department to check it. Engine 17 responded to investigate. Upon arrival resident advised his wife had smelled what she thought were wires burning, and he had noticed a black spot on an outlet in the kitchen. Fire crew checked the outlet and discovered the corner of the outlet had melted. Once the outlet cover was removed it was discovered that the insulation on the wires had melted, and the corner of the outlet box had also melted. The resident shut off the breaker for the outlet. Power shut off to the outlet was confirmed using Circuit Alert Pen and frontal focus on the Tac-Stick. The outlet was then removed by fire crew, the wires were cut back to the insulation, and wire nuts and electrical tape applied to the wires. Resident was advised to contact an electrician to further evaluate the outlet. No further action was taken and the unit returned to service.

Just after midnight at 12:04 AM on Feb. 20, MFD received an alarm from Central Dispatch for a possible gas leak at 661 E. Broadway. Upon arrival, fire crews were met by the neighbor to this residence. He advised that the home was vacant, but while out walking his dog he smelled gas coming from the area of the home. Fire crews began a walk around of the residence and discovered the gas meter was not present; the combustible gas detector was used and discovered a minor leak coming from the gas line. Atmos Energy was requested. Upon Atmos Energy arrival, it was determined that the stop valve was leaking allowing gas to escape. Fire crews were unable to gain access into the residence to evaluate the interior, but the Atmos Energy representative did check the foundation area of the residence, and no presence of gas was detected. The scene was turned over to Atmos Energy, no further action was taken, and all units returned to service.
