MADISONVILLE, Ky. (7/13/17) — Disney’s Beauty and the Beast will come to life at the Glema Mahr Center for the Arts beginning Friday.

Director Seth Brewer in his second production as director, said the production is based on the 1991 animated film, Beauty and the Beast, but, “we are putting our Madisonville twist on it.”

Brewer said the cast contained a lot of local talent with 62 members out of 96 that auditioned, adding the show is one of the largest casts they have ever had for a community theater production.

“That is very exciting because it sparks more interest in community theater, and that’s very important,” said Brewer.

Brewer said Beauty and the Beast is the tale of a young girl, Belle, played by Caralyn DiMitties living in a French provincial town looking for something more out of life, and finds it in a weird, unexpected way.

Belle ends up in an enchanted castle with “The Beast” played by Michael Coon.

The Beast, who is a prince under an evil spell, must break it by finding someone to love him before the last petals fall from a dying rose kept in the West Wing of his castle.

Brewer said the story has many underlying themes and is everything that is expected from a Disney production.

Coon has starred in many productions since high school, mentioning Beauty and the Beast is his first lead in a musical that he found challenging.

“Inside, I feel like such a kindhearted soul, and to be this Beast on the exterior just draws everything I have to put it into the character.”

Coon said it’s going to be a great musical production and encourages the community to come out and to enjoy, especially those with kids.

“It should be really fun for everybody,” he said.

Showtimes are 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

Tickets are $16, and half-price for students and children.

Tickets are available at the Glema Box Office, call (270) 821-2787 or visit www.glemacenter.org.

The Glema Mahr Center for the Arts is located at 2000 College Drive in Madisonville.
