HOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. (7/14/17) — Three area youth from the Pennyrile Soap Box Derby Association are heading to Akron, Ohio, to compete in the All-American Soap Box Derby World Championships this weekend.

Over 400 racers from all over the United States and across the globe will converge in Akron to compete for a coveted title in one of three divisions – Local, Rally and Super Kids.

Thirteen-year-old Lukas Ramey of Hanson will be competing in the Rally Masters Division after qualifying to race in the championships by obtaining points through the Rally season.

Rally racing is much like NASCAR in which racers travel the circuit to gain points to qualify.

Ramey won the 2015 World Rally Championship in the Stock Division and, raced in the Local Masters Division last year, making it to the Top 6 in the Subway Challenge.

His aspiration of winning the race was foiled when he was hit by the New Zealand Masters car that lost control and entered Ramey’s lane before the finish line. The New Zealand racer tapped Ramey’s car as he braked and threw him into a spin causing Ramey to hit another racer, ruining his chance of another national title last year.

Eleven-year-old Levi West of Madisonville competed in the Rally Stock Division and did exceptionally well for his first year.

West took first place in the annual Local Race held in Madisonville and will compete against other Local Race winners in stock in Akron at Nationals.

Thirteen-year-old Landon Watson of Madisonville competed for the first time in the Madisonville Local Race and won the Super-Stock Division.

Watson has a competitive nature and comes from a racing family and possesses great driving skills and will definitely be one to watch.

West is the Points Leader in the Rally Stock Division for Region 12 consisting of Kentucky, Tennessee and North Carolina. He ranked third on the National Points Standing.

Ramey is the runner-up in Region 12 Rally Masters Division and is ranked third, missing second by one point in the National Masters points standings.

The 2017 Nationals will be Ramey’s fourth year to be in the top five in the National Point standings in his division.

Ramey and West have acquired more than 200 points during the 2016 -2017 race season, which puts them in the prestigious “200 Point Club,” and they are two of 21 racers across the U.S. in this year’s “200 Points Club” with 11 of those racers being Kentucky competitors from Madisonville, Bowling Green and Owensboro.

Madisonville has one of only three dedicated soap box derby tracks in Kentucky, offering every racer a variety of driving experiences to make an excellent racer.

“All three local racers are worthy competitors and their hopes are high they will do well,” said Brien Terry, Pennyrile Soap Box Derby President.

Race Week is an exciting time in Akron, said Terry.

Nine-year-old Jeffrey Bailey of Clifton, Kentucky is the Local Super Kids Champion and will compete on Friday, July 21 in the Super Kids Division a race designed for special needs children.

Linda Ramsey Pennyrile Soap Box Derby Race Coordinator said in 2016, was our best race since starting the Super Kids Division with 11 competitors and a large number of volunteers from the Madisonville-Hopkins County Board of Realtors.

All-American Soap Box Derby World Championships Activities kick off on Sunday, July 16 and continue through Saturday, July 22.

Ramey will be the first to compete Tuesday, July 19 in the Rally Masters Dairy Queen Challenge. West and Watson are set to compete Wednesday in the Local Stock and Super-Stock Subway Challenge.

The All-American Race is Saturday, July 22, and sponsored by First Energy, a utility company, in Ohio.

Race Week hosts activities all week including the Mayor’s Cup, adult car racing and mini-car racing.

The All-American Soap Box World Championships will be streamed live Saturday, July 22. For details, go to aasbd.soapboxderby.org for live streaming information, Tweets and Facebook.
