gipson cram hummer MADISONVILLE, Ky. (08/1/17) — The seventh annual Madisonville Police Department “Cram the Cruiser” is 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at Hanson Walmart.

MPD Lt. Scott Gipson said they are collecting school supplies for students in Hopkins County Schools.

He said the event began as a community outreach when Chief Wade Williams came on as an avenue to involve the community and help kids prepare for school.

“No child should start school without school supplies like paper, pencils and basic supplies,” Gipson said.

He recalled one of the first times officers were at Walmart collecting supplies, when a man walked up and said, “I remember what it’s like to start the first day of school with nothing.”

Gipson said the man went into the store and returned with a shopping cart loaded with supplies, adding that he didn’t want any child to ever feel like that.

That day, Gipson noted, “It really solidified what we are doing and why.”

“Our community is so gracious and we usually average about $8,000 each year in donations including cash and supplies,” Gipson said. “The first year was just cramming a cruiser, but it has grown each year, and now we are cramming a Hummer.”

“It’s a great cause,” said Gipson.

Officers plan to sort the school supplies and take them to the Hopkins County Assistance Center for distribution to students via each school’s Family Resource Center. Schools in Hopkins are set to start Aug. 9.

School supplies or donations for “Cram the Cruiser” may also be dropped off at MPD any time before Aug. 5, Gipson said. The station is located at 99 E. Center St.
