hc fiscal3 300HOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. (8/1/17) — There will be no field of dreams in Hopkins County. The land previously considered for the development of a sports complex will likely be sold in the coming weeks.

Hopkins Fiscal Court voted to surplus nearly 100 acres of county-owned land off Interstate 69 that runs along Grapevine Road at a bi-monthly meeting this morning. The county will continue to maintain its nearby West Kentucky Archery Complex and practice fields.

The majority of magistrates cited the motion would better serve public interest in allowing a potential buyer/developer to generate jobs and tax money at the property.

Magistrate Billy Parrish said there is an interested buyer, noting the county hopes to sell the land for $800,000 or more. He declined to discuss proposed parties interested in purchasing the acreage soon up for bid.

County Attorney Byron Hobgood is working on a resolution regarding the future sale of the property. Fiscal Court would likely call a special meeting to pass the ordinance and proceed with accepting bids.

Magistrate Charlie Beshears voted against the motion, saying, “I’m torn. The tourism commission thinks the sports complex is a good theory.”

The county has discussed the potential for a $4 million sports complex over the course of 10 years. Due to reduction in coal severance funds, fiscal court determined the money to fund the complex including required regulations would be too costly.

The county proposes to contribute funds toward renovation and development at YAA Sports Complex in Madisonville instead.

Beshears believes the YAA property likely does not have the potential to develop into a modern sports complex facility.
