Akron 2017 048MADISONVILLE, Ky. (08/2/17) — The 80th running of the All-American Soap Box Derby was held July 16–22 in Akron, Ohio, where three local racers from the Pennyrile Soap Box Derby competed.

Lukas Ramey of Hanson competed in Masters Division, Landen Watson of Madisonville competed in Super-Stock and Levi West also of Madisonville in Stock.

The weeklong event started with opening ceremonies and a parade in downtown Akron.

Ramey participated in the opening parade as a previous World Champion riding in a Kentucky made Corvette.

Races began July 18 with the Dairy Queen Challenge; a three-phase race geared for rally racers only.

Ramey participated in this race, but was knocked out of competition after the first round.

The Eaton Challenge took place July 19, where West won his first round and moved on to the second but was edged out by Connor Bledsoe of Hopkinsville.

Watson competed in Super-Stock Division and won the first two phases of the three-phase race, but was beat by a Florida Super-Stock that went on to win the challenge.

West won the first two heats on the Local Division and lost the third round, just missing the trophy round.

This was West’s first year to compete in Soap Box Derby racing, finishing in the top nine in each division.

Ramey made a few changes to his Masters car and began working his way through the heats, landing a position in the top nine and only missing the championship round by .017, capturing the sixth-place trophy.

Ramey previously won the 2015 World Championship in his stock car.

Kentucky soap box derby racers from Madisonville, Owensboro, Bowling green and Hopkinsville had an amazing showing at the championships. Nine racers made it to the top nine in their respective division including two Super Kids.

“We had 11 of 21 racers of this group rank in the Top 10 National Points Standings – two of which were Ramey in Rally Masters and West in Rally Stock who both ranked third in their divisions,” said parent participant Lisa Ramey.

Kentucky has three tracks with one being in Madisonville. The three tracks offer a variety of racing which has proven to prepare a racer to do well on a world stage.

The 2017-18 race season starts in Owensboro Aug. 12-13 at Ben Hawes Park. Madisonville will host their annual Pumpkin Roll race Oct. 21-22.

Those interested in Soap Box Derby Racing may visit their website at “Pennyrile Soap Box Derby” or Facebook page, Madisonville Soap Box Derby. Cars and instruction are available. Children must be 7-18 years old to race.
