MADISONVILLE, Ky. (08/14/17) — Hopkins County Extension Agent for Agriculture and Natural Resources Curtis Dame has been honored with several prestigious awards over the summer.

The 2017 Achievement Award from the National Association of County Agriculture Agents, given to agents with less than 10 years of service in Cooperative Extension Service and those who have exhibited excellence in the field of professional extension was awarded to Dame at the 2017 National Association of County Agriculture Agents at their Annual Meeting and Professional Improvement Conference held at Salt Lake City, Utah.

This award is only presented to 2 percent of the county extension educators in Kentucky each year.

As a county agent, Dame’s efforts have included involvement in a multi-county grain improvement program, cooperative work with the Hopkins County Regional Chamber of Commerce, Hopkins County Farm Bureau, various state committees, and concerted efforts to promote agriculture locally.

In a separate competition, sponsored by Bayer Crop Sciences, Dame partnered with Muhlenberg County Agriculture Extension Agent Darrell Simpson to create a video project depicting the proper techniques and equipment to safely remove stuck farm equipment.

The two were named state winners and went on to bring home the National Southern Region title as well.

“The national honors are something to be very proud of because of all the entries,” Dame said.

Dame partnered with Webster County Agriculture Extension Agent Vicki Shadrick to create an applied research poster, placing first in Kentucky.

The project was based on the comparison of products for soybeans to determine which project would yield the farmer more for his money.

Dame and Shadrick’s poster will go on to compete at the national level in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Dame also won top awards in the state for the Best Audio/Radio Show by the Kentucky Association of County Agricultural Agents. He was judged on an audio recording of his weekly radio program that is aired Saturday mornings on local radio stations.

Some judging criteria included useful information within content, ability to capture audience attention and projection of a friendly and pleasing personality.
Dame said what has made his awards possible is the fact he has an office filled with great people, who are very unique and strive to help one another.

“All these awards are very exciting and it’s an honor to be able to represent Hopkins County at the state level and the national level as well,” said Dame.
