Hopkinsville Meteorologist Speaks at West Broadway Elementary

DavidepeaksmainMADISONVILLE, KY (1/27/12) – Third graders at West Broadway Elementary School had a special guest speaker on Thursday.  Meteorologist David Bryant visited the three classes taught by Melanie McElroy, Christy Mulligan and Wendy Gamblin.

Bryant was able to utilize the school’s Smart board technology to show the students websites that he uses in preparing weather forecasts.  He was also able to give insight on the recent storms that spawned two weak tornadoes in Todd and Calloway Counties.

Bryant also showed the students some of the items recommended for a disaster preparedness kit such as food, water, and a weather-alert radio.  “It’s important to be prepared before weather emergencies arise so that families don’t have to panic during an event,” says Bryant.

DavidspeaksThe topic of winter weather forecasting was something Bryant also covered as well, “Winter weather is very tricky to forecast because we are dealing with a changing atmosphere in three-dimensions.  The difference of a degree or two over space and time can mean the difference between snow or a cold rain.”

Bryant says it means a lot to him to share his knowledge of weather with children.  “They have such a sense of curiosity when it comes to weather.  It makes it fresh for me every time I get to speak with the kids at school.”  The students in all three classes had recently studied a unit on weather that covered everything from the water cycle to weather instruments.
