HOPKINSVILLE, KY (1/30/12) – Hopkinsville Community College hosted the 2012 Regional Education Summit on Saturday. The theme this year was “Education Pays: Investing in Our Future.” The event was a collaboration of the Christian, Todd and Trigg County Public Schools.

Stu Silberman, Executive Director of the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence spoke to attendees during the summit. He addressed leadership and school improvement from a global perspective. He focused on practices that will position Kentucky students to compete in a global economy.

Keynote speaker Bill Grace is billed as a social justice activist, traveling teacher, storyteller and architect of ideas. Grace spoke about stewardship as the practice of thinking ahead to how our actions today can benefit people we will never see. When addressing education as an “investment in our collective future” he used the phrase, “We are all better off, if we are all better off.”

Grace referred to the impact of an “education for all” mindset. He recognized that there are both economic and social benefits. For society, he referenced that high school dropouts are eight times more likely to be incarcerated than those who graduate high school.

The topic of “honoring educators” was also a key message to the audience. He said it is important to thank teachers and to listen to what they have to say. Grace said there should be no more unfunded mandates forced upon the system. He encouraged partnerships where members of the community support the educational professionals in achieving their goals and objectives.

Tomorrow SurfKY News will report on Superintendent Brady Link’s remarks concerning the Regional Education Summit and recent improvements made within Christian County Public Schools.
