HOPKINSVILLE, KY - E.G. (Bummy) Hampton, age 94 of Pembroke passed away at 5:02 PM Friday, February 10, 2012 at Jennie Stuart Medical Center of natural causes.
Mr. Bummy was born December 27, 1917 in Todd County, KY the son of the late Frank Wade and Ellen Goens Hampton. He was the oldest surviving member of the Pembroke Christian Church where he served on the board and numerous committees. His civic duties started in Pembroke where he served on the Town Board for 12 years, presided as judge for 8 years, and the mayor of Pembroke for 15 years. Mr. Hampton was one of the founders and charter members of the Pembroke Ruritan Club. He was a member of the Hopkinsville B.P.O.E where he held several offices and served as Exalted Ruler for two terms. Mr. Hampton built Pembroke Elevator and Hampton Grain Warehouse. He and a partner Mr. Graham Price built and opened Hampton-Price Drug Store. In 1953 he built Pembroke Clinic and brought in Dr. Rose and Dr. Salhaney as the practicing physicians. In 1965, Mr. Hampton built Hampton Grain on Skyline Dr. and sold it in 1969. It is now known as Hopkinsville Elevator. After retiring from the grain business, he built and established Hampton Meat Processing in August, 1975. He and his son, Ernie has served the Hopkinsville and surrounding areas in the food industry for the past 37 years.
He was preceded in death by his first wife of 49 years, Erlene Harned Hampton in 1984 and also four brothers and three sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Annie Hampton; one son, Ernie Hampton and his wife Dottie of Hopkinsville; one daughter, Priscilla Tester and her husband Jack of Birmingham, AL; one step-daughter, Darlene Matz and her husband Marvin of Port St. Lucie, FL; one step-son, Bobby Perdue of Dover, TN; five grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren and four step-grandchildren and 2 step step- grandchildren.
Services will be 3:00 PM Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at Maddux-Fuqua-Hinton Funeral Home in Hopkinsville with Rev. Nate Quarcelino and Rev. Terry Kisler officiating. Burial will follow in Rosedale Cemetery in Pembroke. Visitation will be 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM Monday, February 13, 2012 at Maddux-Fuqua-Hinton Funeral Home.
