Whitfield Announces Federal Grants Assistance for Fire Departments in Earlington and Mayfield

ed whitfield 300WASHINGTON, DC (1/5/12) – U.S. Rep. Ed Whitfield (KY-01) today announced that three fire departments in Kentucky’s First Congressional District have been awarded grants through the Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Receiving the grants for operations and safety are the Earlington Fire Department ($677,612), Mayfield-Graves County Fire Department ($512,863), and the Mayfield Fire Department ($116,793).

“These firefighting grants help ensure that our first responders have the resources they need to serve our communities,” said Whitfield. “I congratulate all three departments in receiving these awards.”

The purpose of the AFG program is to enhance the ability of fire departments and emergency management service (EMS) organizations that are not affiliated with hospitals to protect the health and safety of the public, as well as first-responder personnel. Grants are awarded through a competitive process overseen by fire service experts. Applications are reviewed on how the funds will fulfill the top priorities of the AFG program which are operations and safety, and vehicle acquisition.
