HENDERSON, KY (1/10/12) – A Kentucky state Senator is proclaiming that the 4th Senatorial District received over $3.5 million in funds from Kentucky Lottery proceeds.
Senator Dorsey Ridley, a Democrat representing Caldwell, Crittenden, Henderson, Livingston, Union and Webster counties, says over two thousand grants and scholarships totaling more than $3 million were distributed to Northwest Kentucky students seeking higher educational opportunities.
Records show 948 grants and scholarships totaling $1,413,425 were given to students in Henderson County. Union County students received 371 grants and scholarships worth $588,745 and Webster County students received 321 grants and scholarships worth $464,006.
“I cannot think of a better use for these funds than educating our young people,” said Sen. Ridley.
Senator Ridley believes economic growth is tied to education, saying “We need to invest in the education of our citizens. The young people who are graduating from colleges, universities and other post-secondary schools are our future leaders.”
Since 1999, Kentucky Lottery proceeds have funded more than one million grants and scholarships worth more than $1.74 billion.
Prior to 1999, the Council on Postsecondary Education found that college attendance has jumped 40 percent since the creation of the Kentucky Lottery funds.
