scholarship purple 300KENTUCKY (2/21/12) – Two Kentucky public high school seniors will be eligible to receive the Southeastern States Pupil Transportation Conference Buster Bynum Scholarship. The scholarship recipients will be able to apply the award toward college costs for the 2012-13 school year.

The Buster Bynum Scholarship is a one-time, $1,000 education scholarship awarded to two deserving public school students (each receiving $1,000) in each of the 14 member states of the Southeastern States Pupil Transportation Conference (SESPTC). The scholarship is named for Buster Bynum, the current treasurer, past-president and longtime member of the SESPTC Board of Directors, who has been a strong advocate for improving student transportation safety for more than 43 years. Prior to his retirement, Bynum served as the Virginia state director of Pupil Transportation and also held other positions in the field of school transportation. Scholarship sponsors are the Alabama Department of Education Pupil Transportation Section and the SESPTC.

Created in 2005, Buster Bynum Scholarships are awarded to children of school bus transportation employees actively employed in public school transportation for the past five years and where the total annual family income is less than $75,000. Eligible students must have a cumulative 3.0 GPA and are selected based on their leadership, citizenship and service.

Each school system will select a local winner and submit the winning application to the State SESPTC Selection Committee no later than May 15. The two finalists will be notified no later than May 25.

For more scholarship information and deadlines for local application submission, contact your local school district’s director of Pupil Transportation or school counselor.
