Extension Homemakers Support Military Families

support military family 300MUHLENBERG COUNTY, KY (2/6/12) – Active duty military families usually live on or near their bases but in contrast National Guard or Reserve members and their families live in all our Kentucky communities and are our neighbors. They work regular jobs and their children attend community schools.

During declared states of emergency and natural disasters the governor can activate the National Guard and during times of national crisis, National Guard and Reserve members can be called by the President to federal active duty. In military terms, they are taken from their reserve status to active duty status. The announcement of deployment may be sudden or expected. In each family, the deployed member’s departure leaves a large hole in the heart and in the family’s daily habits, tasks, and activities. The families left behind often feel like nobody around them knows or cares what they are going through.

Caring neighbors and community groups can make a huge, positive difference in the lives of families of deployed and returned service members. Muhlenberg County Homemakers will have a lesson on Supporting Military Families on February 27 at 9:30 a.m. at the Muhlenberg County Extension Office. Participants will learn about the structure and mission of the branches of the military, become aware of the presence and needs of military families, and receive materials on supporting military families in your community.

For more information contact your Muhlenberg County Extension Office at 270-338-3124. Educational programs of the Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service serve all people regardless of race, color, age, sex, religion, disability, or national origin.
